Coming from a background in Engineering I would have to say I’m rather sceptical when it comes to alternative remedies or treatments. That said, I have an open mind, so when Roma Corrigan of full body Amber Massage in Rathcormac in North Cork invited me to try out her Amber Massage I had to test it out for myself.
First things first Amber is widely known for its purported healing properties, most Mothers will be familiar with Amber Necklaces which are supposed to be good for children who have problems with teething. Amber is a symbol of Lithuania, where Roma is originally from (Savas means ‘own’ in Lithuanian FYI – lesson for the day!), having been harvested from the shores of the Baltic Sea for many years. The Amber Roma uses is from her Grandfather who used it to create jewellery.
I got the full body Amber Massage. It’s not like any massage I’ve had before – I’d almost describe it as a massage combined with a ritual. Roma lightly presses the pieces of Amber off different points around the body, across your back, legs, arms, right down to the very tips of your fingers and toes. The massage was lovely; deep without the force of a deep tissue massage. Roma paid great attention to different areas on the body compared with other massages I’ve had, like my shins and the balls of my feet which was surprisingly effective at relieving tension in these areas.
I think this massage is something people will experience in different ways and honestly I know that sounds kind of airy fairy or something but hear me out! I injured my shoulder a few weeks back and have been going for physio on it since, and during the massage my injured arm went really hot, not uncomfortably so but noticeably so. It didn’t cure my arm but it help loosen it out after a physio session the day before for sure.
The MAJOR benefit of it for me is that I have been sleeping so much better since the massage. I won’t go into it but we’ve had a few somewhat personally stressful few months and as a result of it I’ve been dreaming mad during my sleep (you can see from the picture below how tired I look!). I wake up in the morning and my mind is not rested because it’s been so active all night, it was like going to see a thriller at the cinema albeit one with a rubbish plot! Honestly since last Wednesday night I have not had a single dream AND for the first time in 16 months since the small lady arrived on the scene my husband woke before me when she shuffled one night, this has never happened before so my sleep is deeper than before too.
So take from that what you will, I’ve inherited some of my father’s suspicious trait so normally I would be pulling all sorts of weird faces if someone tried to tell me that a massage would have this effect. But I can only, as always, give my honest opinion, and that is that the massage itself was relaxing and the restful nights ever since have been just as relaxing!
Check out Roma’s website for Savas Beauty here, she has a huge selection of treatments available from threading to waxing, tanning to nails. She also has a number of alternative therapists, a physical therapist and a beautician specializing in eyelash extensions that comes once a month. The full body Amber Massage costs €55 for 1 hour and 30 minutes (of pure relaxation!). There is no other salon or spa offering Amber Massage in Ireland so a visit to Savas Beauty is a unique experience!
