Book Review – The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid

My big lady was absolutely ecstatic to receive this book in the post recently, The Fairytale Hairdresser and the Little Mermaid written by Abie Longstaff and Lauren Beard. It’s a really lovely colourful book with lots of really detailed pictures throughout.

The story tells the tale of a renowned hairdresser, Kittie and her friend, Coral, the Little Mermaid who is desperate to be turned into a human so that she can find love. She has a beautiful voice and her singing catches the attention of Prince Marino across a crowded beach, who goes in search of the source of the beautiful voice. However, the Little Mermaid turns to the magical Sea Witch who changes her into a human but tricks her and takes away her beautiful voice. The little mermaid is devastated to have lost her voice so enlists the help of her hairdresser friend and so they go in search of the witch to get the mermaids voice back. The tale tells a lovely story of female empowerment and friendship and of course ends in love like all good fairy-tales!

My three year old adores this book and we’ve been reading it most nights since it arrived two weeks ago. If I’m honest, I tend to steer clear of fairy tales normally but that’s a very personal preference and perhaps not a fair one to push on a little girl who loves all things pink and sparkly. The story is quite long so maybe suited for a four year old and upwards, although we edited down the story downand referred to the pictures with our three year old and she still thoroughly enjoyed it. The book features ‘cameos’ from other fairy-tale characters which are fun to try and pick out, maybe it’s just me but I found some of them a little difficult to identify.

All in all a lovely book for any child mad about fairy tales and sparkly things! Have you read any other books from the series with your children? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

There are a large range of books in the series ‘The Fairytale Hairdresser’ available on Amazon.com and online in Ireland at Dubary Books retailing for approximately €11 (excluding postage). To find out more about the Author Abie Longstaff click here

We were lucky enough to receive this book for free in return for a review, all thoughts and opinions are my own and are genuinely honest.

  1. I am not familiar with this series but will definitely look out for it. It looks an interesting story line and children do love to spot characters from other books.
