DIY Sensory Cube Toy for Babies Tutorial

This is for a sensory taggy cube, which is a little more complex than the taggy blanket tutorial I showed a few months ago (which you can check out here). The taggy cube can be as big or as little as you like but keep in mind this one I made actually required a good lot of cotton batting to get it filled out nicely.

Measure out 6 identical square pieces of fabric. You can choose any size you like, somewhere between 4-6 inches is a good size. Then iron the squares so they are nice and flat.

Start with two pieces of fabric, placing them face to face with the printed side of the material facing INWARDS. Sew along one side. Sew 4 squares together in a length, always placing the colorful side of the material together.

The four squares combined should look like this – colourful print facing inwards.

The add the base by pinning it to the four sides, if you’ve measured your squares out perfectly these should match up exactly.

Add your ribbons between your pins once you have the base added then pin them in place for sewing. Sew up one square all the way around and the final square in your cube leave approximately 2 inches open. Then through this opening turn your fabric inside out.

Stuff your cotton batting in through the opening, fluffing it up before you add it to create a nice soft square. Add your bells during this stage and move them into the middle of the cube between the batting.

Hand sew the opening closed and there you have a lovely sensory cube suitable for your baby or as a gift.

  2. What a fantastic idea this is. I love it and I really want to try and make my own. I have a sewing machine which never gets used so it would be nice to make something like this for bubs. xx

  3. You have such brilliant tutorials, Eimear. I’m hopeless with a needle and thread (or a sewing machine!) I really need to learn one of these days 🙂

  4. What a wonderful idea to make your own! I’ve never thought of that before. My kiddies all love their taggie blankets & sure this would have bit a hit when they were younger! x
